An Adventurous Day Trip to the Falls
It was a beautiful early spring day when we loaded up the truck and set off to go waterfall hunting. Since both Wisconsin and the upper peninsula (UP) in Michigan are scattered with waterfalls, we had plenty of options to choose from.
Our first stop was Kakabika Falls (off US 2) approximately 15 miles from Watersmeet, MI. The waterfall can be slightly hard to find, but once you turn off the main highway onto CR 527, just continue on the dirt road for a mile or so until you reach a stone bridge crossing the river; then park right next to the bridge. From there, you can easily hike down along the river. It’s a pretty straight forward hike down to the waterfall. Once there, it’s like stepping into an enchanted forest and Kakabika Falls is truly a sight for sore eyes. We hiked along the waterfall for a bit before sitting down in the warming sunshine to enjoy a delicious sandwich lunch that we got from Eagle River Bakery earlier that morning. After Kakabika Falls, we drove north to O Kun de Kun Falls just 8 miles outside of Bruce Crossing, MI. There is a sign leading to the trailhead of O Kun de Kun Falls on the east side of US 45. It can be a bit tricky to know where to go once you park in the parking lot (there was still snow on the ground when we were there), but just trust your instincts and keep going straight. After 15 minutes, you will start to hear the roar from the waterfall. As you descend, a charming wooden bridge crossing the Baltimore River will come into view. There are several spots and angles to view the falls from – Just pick and choose! It’s safe to say that O Kun de Kun is a great place to visit in any season.
We had plenty more on our waterfall-hunting agenda that day, but we just ran out of time. We only managed to squeeze in two waterfalls that day – hiking and snapping pictures was just too much fun. Luckily, there are so many more waterfalls out there just waiting to be explored!
